SPAN-AM WAR PERIOD PHOTO - MEDICAL -
PENNSYLVANIA?
- 6" X 8 5/8" photo of 6 soldiers, one
wearing a medical arm band. Second soldier from left has
his hand on pole and under his arm on the tent is a partial
sign(?) the letters "sylvania" can be made out with a glass.
Trapdoor Springfield rifles are stacked in front. Also at the
peak of the tent, only seen with a glass although with the
computer could bring out some text (as seen in photos) but
could not read it. Lower right corner of mount is missing
otherwise good condition.

PHOTOGRAPH OF SPAN-AM WOUND - Photograph on a post card type
format of a Span-Am veteran's back wound. Reverse of the card has a
pencil inscription "Back Wound / Santiago de Cuba / 1898". Photographs
showing combat wounds are choice for any war, this is the first I've seen
for the Span-Am War. There weren't that many casualties - as wars go.

the mount as can be seen in photo.

UNITED SPANISH WAR VETERANS CAMP BANNER -
PETER LEARY Jr. CAMP 4 - DEPARTMENT OF
MARYLAND
- (51" X 63" plus a 2" fringe on 3 sides) Large
silk and embroidered Post or Camp banner. The
embroidering is stunning but unfortunately the silk has
many fragile areas. There is a cloth matting that separates
the two sides of the flag and is sewn inside. The main color
of the silk is very light blue - the photos make it look more
grayish. The banner will not hang well due to the condition
of the silk but the previous owner had a great idea of
enclosing it within a manufactured table top, keeping the
banner laying flat. Again, if this interests you, be warned the
silk is very fragile in places - mainly around the borders
.

SPAN-AM WAR & PHILIPPINE CAMPAIGN PARTICIPANT'S
MEDAL - STATE OF MICHIGAN
- Very desirable medal from the State
of Michigan, mostly seen without the ribbon and pin bar. The medal is
un-named as many were. Medal was designed by V.D. Brenner, who as
coin collectors may recognize, designed the Lincoln penny. The medal
and pin bar are in very good condition. The ribbon has a small frayed
spot on the edge of a crease on the ribbon - still very solid.

2nd NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS - SPAN-AM - There are generally two
types of ribbons, printed and tapestry. The tapestry are as beautiful as they
come. This is a large ribbon (approx. 3" x 10 1/2") made by Warner Woven
Label Co., in Paterson, N.J. It is a 1923 ribbon to commemorate the
twenty-fifth anniversary of the departure of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer
Infantry for the Spanish American War. The festivities were held in Paterson,
NJ on May 1-2, 1923. The ribbon has great graphics and is as nice as you will
ever see one - that is if you can find another one. Photos don't do it justice.

SPAN-AM  (OR MEXICAN BORDER) SOLDIER WITH AN 1897
WINCHESTER PUMP SHOTGUN
- Image appears to be more
Span-Am than it does Mexican Border War, complete with blanket
roll, canteen and what you may never see again, holding a M-1897
Winchester pump shotgun. These were used VERY sparingly during
those two conflicts but more in WWI as 'Trench Guns'. I have yet to
have seen a Span-Am period soldier with one. Mount has a chunck
broken off but the image has not been affected.

SPAN-AM - 3RD NEW YORK INFANTRY
ID'd GROUPING
- Group belonging to Private
Frank B. Warner - In May, 1898 he enlisted in
the 3rd New York Infantry for two years and on
July 12, 1898 transferred to the US Hospital
Corps. The 3rd stayed in the States but he may
have served in the War theatre while in the
Hospital Corps (reference later to the campaign
hat). In the group is his M-1889 campaign hat
which has a Spanish 3rd Infantry collar
insignia attached (picked up in the theatre??),
pair of trousers, haversack with strap, canteen
with strap, gaiters and eating utensils with
original leather holders. The majority of which
have his initials inscribed on them.
$ 1,275.
The campaign hat has a detached sweatband but it is present. The ribbon is still in great shape and
there is a hole (as can be seen in the photos at the top front edge of the fold. The Spanish insignia
I've been told was a rare practice by some soldiers when they could obtain captured insignia, so
perhaps when in the Hospital Corps he was able to get this). Trousers are in very good condition
with only a small hole in the crotch but at the very bottom - would not see while displayed. There
have been belt loops added but other than that pretty straight. The canteen, haversack and eating
utensils show little wear. The gaiters look to be used the most, missing one of the brass buttons.
Marked inside as Wiley's Leggings - Fastening Patent March 31st, '85 and has inspector's stamp
along with Warner's initials.
Note: There is a New York greatcoat that I acquired with this grouping but the owner did not
believe it was Warner's so is not included in the group - if interested please inquire.
